We often ‘think’ we know about a destination simply based on what we hear and see about it on the news. However, the manner in which a country or city is portrayed on social media is rarely in its entirety. Social media has taken the world by storm and led us on a rollercoaster ride filled with selected truths.

The country under scrutiny here has been making headlines all over the world for over a decade. News has flooded our feeds, flashed across our screens and made its way to newspaper columns either saying “Suicide attack kills….”, “Bomb attack kills…” or something equally devastating

If you thought AFGHANISTAN, then you’re absolutely right! However, I’m not going to talk about the awful things that have happened and continue to happen in this country, but instead, reveal a few fascinating things about it that you may not have heard before.

Did you know that Afghanistan is one of the most affordable countries in the world?

Even the biggest cities in Afghanistan such as Herat are highly affordable for tourists. You can go to the market and purchase various random items for unimaginably cheap prices.

For example, a handmade broom costs about 35-40 cents, a kilo of cucumbers costs about 10 cents, a ticket to a wrestling match costs about 15 cents and around 2 pounds of hash seeds can be bought at the marketplace for about 10-20 cents.

While shopping, you’ll also be able to soak in some sights and historical places of this country. There’s a marketplace casually located right next to Alexander the Great’s former home which dates back to about 330 B.C.

Afghanistan becomes even cheaper when you exchange dollars on the street, as opposed to an ATM. This is because the black market exchange rate gives you 15% more than ATMs for every dollar bill!

Tuk-Tuks and Pom Juice

One of the coolest and most fun ways to get around the city in Afghanistan is by tuk-tuk, which is a three-wheeled taxi or by rickshaw. You can negotiate prices with one of the many drivers on the streets and simply hop on, it’s as easy as that. A basic ride around the city of Herat in a tuk-tuk would cost approximately 50 cents.

Furthermore, one of the best beverages you’ll have in Afghanistan is fresh pomegranate juice. During peak season, street vendors sell this refreshing juice on every corner. A delicious cup of pom juice could be bought for as cheap as 60 cents.

It’s also noteworthy that Afghan food is extremely underrated and cheap! You have to try it to believe it.

Is it completely safe?

Due to the current situation on the ground, it’s always best to keep an eye out when you’re out and about in Afghanistan also known as the Least visited country in the world. The local police and military won’t hesitate to stop and interrogate you if they sense even a hair out of place.
