Iraq Tales of 500

When you Google “Iraq”, the first thing you usually see is …

TERRORISM!

WAR!

GUNS!

Basically, everything that screams DANGER!!!

So, it’s definitely the last place you’d think of as a tourist destination.

But today, all that’s about to change because you’ll see a side of Iraq that’s beyond the war, terrorism, and danger. A side of Iraq that you wouldn’t have heard about and most probably will never see on the news!

While tourists were banned from Iraq for 40 years, now for the first time in a long time, they offer visas on arrival!

Is Iraq Dangerous?

Checkpoints & Military

Going to Iraq, you may think it’d be packed with military and checkpoints! And rightfully, it’ll be. However, they’re extremely friendly and not at all what you’d think they’d be like.

Women in Iraq

Many people think that women in Iraq are probably limited to their homes. However, the reality is very much different. You’ll see women out running their own businesses and making a living for themselves.

Is Iraq safe to visit - For women?

Female travellers may think travelling to Iraq means they have to cover up when stepping outdoors because it’s a Muslim country. However, believe it or not, you only have to do so when visiting certain mosques or very religious cities. In these places, you most likely will have to wear an Abaya. Otherwise, you can dress however you want!

Party in I. R. A. Q.

If you think you wouldn’t come across any parties or entertainment in Iraq, THINK AGAIN! You’ll have the time of your life singing and dancing at rap concerts. Yes, RAP concerts in Iraq are absolutely a thing. You can also listen to some wonderful street music while on a walk or at a local kite festival.

Good food, good times

Iraq has a delicious and diverse cuisine that mostly consists of meat. However, if you’re vegetarian, do not fear as there are some options for you as well. While there aren’t many vegetarian options, there’s a signature falafel sandwich with a local mango sauce called “amba” which you definitely must try. While this is very cheap, it’ll also be one of the best things you’ll taste in Iraq.

Friends in every corner

You might also think that locals would be a little suspicious of foreigners. However, this is not at all true. The locals are so friendly that they may even go to the extent of inviting you into their homes for a meal. They might also give you little gifts and memorabilia to remind you of your time in Iraq. People in Iraq are so helpful that if your car broke down, many would stop immediately to lend a helping hand or you may even be able to hitch-hike to your destination with ease.

Is Iraq safe to visit? What to see in Iraq?

You wouldn’t just see ruins because of the war, instead, you’ll see the most unbelievably beautiful mosques and amazing places like the marshlands filled with water, ancient Babylon, and the biggest active cemetery in the world!

However, like in many countries, the best part of Iraq will definitely be its generous, open, and friendly people.

So in short, yes, you should be careful of Iraq, but not because it’s dangerous but because once you go there, you might not want to leave…
