Deep in the jungle of Central Vietnam lies a wonder of the world… A lost universe that hides its own unique ecosystem…
In 1990, somewhere amidst the lush green jungles of central Vietnam, a local logger discovered a mysterious hole among the foliage and bushes. As he looked into it, he felt a strong wind blowing into his face followed by a sound of a river from the depths of the cave.
Fast forward to 2009, the logger returned to the cave along with a group of scientists, who then discovered that this cave named Son Doong was in fact the largest in the world.
Under the jungles of Vietnam there is said to be a deep underground labyrinth hiding three of the largest caves in the world, and Son Doong is number one on this list. Vietnam’s Mountain River Cave also known as Hang Son Doong is uncharted territory and next to no one has forged the depths of this monstrous cave. The central passage reaches 660 feet in height in some places and is more than half as tall as the Empire State Building in New York. The area of the cave is so huge that an entire New York City block with 40-story skyscrapers would fit inside it.
The vast space inside this magnificent cave is filled with various plants, unique microclimates, and landscapes. There is even an actual jungle growing underground. All this is possible because of the collapsed ceiling in some places which lets sunlight penetrate from above. Enormous stalactites, 250 feet tall, formed over millennia. Some limestone predates dinosaurs, dating back 450 million years. Towering stalactites, reaching 250 feet, developed over countless millennia. Certain limestone formations existed 450 million years before the dinosaurs.
Earth’s Deepest Secrets Reside
This cave contains numerous rivers that formed due to rainwater descending through holes in the ceiling. These rivers are said to be smooth and fast similar to a slide at a waterpark. However, riding them is not the best idea as you may end up in one of the long undiscovered labyrinths. But don’t feel disappointed, as the cave also includes massive rooms with lakes that offer perfect swimming opportunities.
Nature’s Secret Party in Son Doong Cave
Inside Son Doong Cave, discover exotic wildlife and 400 million-year-old fossils, adding to its allure. There are many other things you can see in Son Doong besides underground labyrinths and rivers. You can walk for hours along dark mountain corridors. These corridors are strikingly beautiful but also dangerous at the same time.
Finally, to get to the coolest part, since 2013 Son Doong cave has been open to tourists. However, It’s not the kind of place for a quick selfie – exploring the cave takes several days. Visitors to Son Doong Cave in Vietnam say it’s the most amazing place they’ve seen.
