Uyuni Bolivia , Mirror Earth

Most of us here are sunset and sunrise enthusiasts, I know!  We lose our minds when we see splendid sunsets and sunrises.

What if I told you that there is the largest mirror on earth that reflects the beautiful phenomena of the universe? Not only sunrises and sunsets but also starry night skies!

Vast, empty, yet spectacular.

I can sense that a little carousel has happened in your aesthetic part of the brain.

I bet you want to know more about it. Let’s dive into it.

The mirror is none other than the Salar de Uyuni, the so-called largest salt flat on the earth.

Salt flat? What’s that? Salar De Uyuni?

Salar de Uyuni is located in southwestern Bolivia, in the high-altitude Bolivian Altiplano that stretches from southeastern Peru, all situated on the South American continent.

When Lago Minchin, a prehistoric lake (a lake that has reliably carried water for over a million years) that once covered the majority of southwest Bolivia, dried up, this largest salt flat was formed.

Above is the mirror, but have we ever thought about what lies under this vast salt lake?

The world’s largest Lithium deposit; in fact, around 70% of the world’s lithium is mined here. Just to remind you, lithium is the element responsible for powering laptops, smartphones, and electric cars.

People who have visited this place say that Salar de Uyuni must be the world’s 8th wonder. Fair enough!

So, what really happens here?

When the salt is covered with a thin layer of water, it reflects the sky breathtakingly back at itself like a cosmic mirror, especially in the wet season.

I mean, take a look at this!

If you think, “I must visit salar de uyuni salt flats,”

The weather is mild and clear from May to November, but the salt flats are baked dry, so there is no mirror effect.

During the wet summer months of December to April, the flats are covered in water and turn into the world’s largest mirror, making it the best time to visit salar de uyuni salt flats. Even driving through the flats is interesting.

Sun rises on the land too,

Sunsets on the land too,

At night, at Salar de Uyuni, stars move on the land too!
